With Bucky Reese
Bucky Reese: Welcome to WrestleTalk. I'm your host, Bucky Reese and my oh my, what a way to kick off the first of what we hope to be many, many great shows devoted to the arrival of the hottest ticket in town-- Wrestletown. Tonight, we have the man behind the curtain, Dean Willard, the "Dean of Reality Television." Dean, welcome to the show.
Dean Willard: Thank you for having me.
Bucky Reese: Also with us tonight is a man who needs no introduction. He's a long time friend, and a pillar of the Holston community. Of course, I am talking about former Husky coach and now the General Manager of Wrestletown, Bobby McVeigh. Bobby, as always, great to have you on the show.
Bobby McVeigh: Thanks Buck.
Bucky Reese: And finally, rounding out the show, we have the trio of Assistant General Manager Clayton Cobb, along with the Director of Public Relations, Samantha Pavak, and Director of the Hardcore Division, Ian Echo. Welcome to everyone. Now let's get started. I suppose I am talking to the Wrestletown Executive Committee, and Dean, we all know that you are the man behind the assembly of this team. What can you tell us about the thought process.
Dean Willard: Well let me start by saying that I think we have assembled a wonderful team here, and I could not be prouder. Starting with Bobby, as you know, I have been following Bobby's career, and what he has done for the Holston wrestling program for years, and it is just amazing. When you think of the success that this team has had, year after year, it's just so consistent; and then when you think about how small this community is-- to produce such a dynasty is one thing, but to do it from such a small population pool-- well, it takes a special individual to accomplish what Bobby has accomplished.
Bucky Reese: No doubt.
Bobby McVeigh: Dean, stop or you're gonna give me a complex. Seriously though, I'm just humbled and honored to be part of something like Wrestletown, the same way I've been honored to be party of the Holston Husky wrestling program for this many years. This community truly is something special-- I mean, not just the athletes, but the entire community that gets behind them and support them year after year-- they make my job easy and make me look good.
Bucky Reese: You say that, and I know you for many years so I know you're a man of humility, but the truth is, it takes exceptional leadership qualities to bring it all together, and many are banking on those same qualities to yield dividends with Wrestletown. But Dean, I have to ask you, and I am sure you understand, as talk show host I need to prod the elephant in the room; and that elephant is this-- many expected you to selected Clayton Cobb to take the reigns as General Manager of Wrestletown, but after a great deal of petitioning by the mayor, you went with Bobby McVeigh. So my questions, first to you, Dean, is what was the deciding factor and do you stand by your decision? And then to Clayton, are there any hard feelings in being passed up for the General Manager position?
Dean Willard: This was actually an easy decision because I knew that either way-- whether it was Bobby or Clayton in the GM role and the other as second in command, I could not go wrong. Together, they bring the total package. Clayton, for sure, knows marketing, he knows media, he knows television, he knows what sells, and he knows professional wrestling. For me, the deciding factor is that Bobby knows this town. He knows the Holston Community unlike any other. This is home grown organization. We expect to see many wrestlers from the community rise through the ranks. Bobby is the glue that holds it all together.
Bucky Reese: What do you have to say, Clayton? In an interview that ran on ESPN, you are quoted, perhaps prematurely, as saying you were exciting to be taking the role as General Manager, only to be passed by for Bobby. Any hard feelings.
(There is a brief pause)
Clayton Cobb: Hard feelings? Well of course not. I'm a team player, and I respect Bobby and everything he has done for the high school wrestling team. How do you not love that?
Bucky Reese: Now while we know that Dean may have been responsible for bringing Bobby on board, we all know that Bobby, it is you that are responsible for bringing on board Miss Samantha Pavak, the new Wrestletown Director of Public Relations. Perhaps I should direct this question to Sam-- can you tell us what your role will be within the organization?
Samantha Pavak: I'm pretty much gonna be a utility player behind the scenes, putting out fires, recruiting, making sure the wrestlers are happy and scouting out new talent.
Bucky Reese: New talent. I'm glad you mentioned that, because that segues perfectly into our next topic--
Ian Echo: Actually, Bucky, I haven't had the opportunity to introduce my--
Bucky Reese: We'll get to you soon, Ian. First, I need to ask: Wrestletown seems to have a lot going for it-- the staff, the fan base, the exposure, hell, you even have a fancy new website. But the one thing that is ominously missing is the talent. So I need to ask, where is the talent? The roster is looking slim right now. The first show is only a week and a half away-- will you even have a roster to fill the show?
Dean Willard: Bucky, I'll take this one. We are confident in our product. We are confident in our team. We are confident in our fan base. And we are confident that we will attract the top wrestlers, both local and from around the globe. We've already signed some big names. We've got Calvin Kendrick signed, and he's as home grown as you can get. Folks will recall his run for the Husky's a few years ago, and he's in the best shape of his life. We've also got Kolin Daire, talk about a guy that can do it all: he can wrestle, he can box, he can kickbox, and his ground game is phenomenal. In addition, we have a veteran in Jack Evans-- twenty years of experience inside the ring, and this man has been in some wars overseas, as well as in Canada. And then we have this new kid, Isaac King. Let me tell you something, he doesn't have a lot of experience, but I saw him training over at Colton Woods's place, and he has some work ethic this kid.
Bucky Reese: Dean, I understand what you are saying, and these are some solid names; but clearly you can appreciate you cannot run an organization with less than a handful of names on the roster. What are the plans? Are there any other names out there that you can discuss? Any other plans to bring in new talent?
There is a pause. It is longer than would be considered comfortable for radio.
Bobby McVeigh: Well Bucky, I guess now is as good a time as any to announce that yes, I have spoken with C.J. Nucifora, and he will be in attendance at The Show, Episode One when it comes to the Steel Mill Auditorium in a week and a half.
Bucky Reese: Well that is certainly exciting news, and news that should have all of Holston salivating-- the return of this city's favorite son, C.J. Nucifora. But "in attendance" what does that mean? Samantha, do you have any more information on C.J.'s status?
Samantha Pavak: Me? I--uh....no, actually, this is the first I've heard of it. I mean, I knew that Bobby had gone out to see him, but I....excuse me, I have to step out for a moment.
Bucky Reese: Well alright then, we'll ask our General Manager-- Bobby, is C.J. coming as a spectator, or as a fighter.
Bobby McVeigh: C.J. will be here as guest-- as my guest.
Bucky Reese: So he is not slated to complete at The Show: Episode One?
Bobby McVeigh: No, he his not.
Bucky Reese: Well, I thank you for clearing that up. I am sure there will be a lot of disappointed fans out there, but you take what you can get, I suppose, and I'm sure the fans will be happy to have him back home, even if it is just for a brief appearance.
Bobby McVeigh: Bucky, I should clarify that he hasn't ruled out--
Clayton Cobb: You know what Bucky, I got a juicy little piece of information that I was saving for a rainy day, but since I was hoping to hear that Bobby had signed C.J., and since that isn't the case, it sure does feel like it is raining, and I just can't let this show end on such a sour note. So let me be the first to say to all you wrestling fans out there, fear not. While Bobby was trying to make C.J. Nucifora happen, Clayton Cobb was in fact actually making things happen.
Bucky Reese: Well now, it sounds like Mr. Clayton Cobb is coming through in the clutch, and you certainly have my attention. What've you got for us?
Clayton Cobb: Well, let's just say, it may feel rainy and gloomy in Holston right now, but fear now, because Clayton Cobb is bringing the Sunshine to Holston; and with that, there will be two for the price of one. And that's all I'm gonna say, I'm sure you know where I'm going with this, but you will all just have to wait and see come March 30th, The Show: Episode One-- you will not want to miss it.
Bucky Reese: Now that sounds like a high note to sign off on, and with that, I want to thank my guests.
Ian Echo: But Mr. Reese, I--
Bucky Reese: I'm sorry, Ian, but we are simply out of time. I'll get you next time. Until then, I am Bucky Reese saying so long you Huskies-- I'll see you ringside.
