It was one week ago that Wrestletown competitor Jack Evans was unceremoniously fired, in a power play by Wrestletown owner and CEO Dean Willard. The termination of Evans, which has on the surface remained one of the least talked about storylines leading into Ascension on May 10, 2015, has caused a tremendous uproar behind the scenes. Putting aside that the ring veteran known as the Scarred Sentinel was literally the poster boy for Wrestletown's first venture into pay per view broadcasting, sources say that his unexpected departure from Holston has left Colton Woods-- his expected adversary-- without an opponent in a match with serious contractual implications that can impact the entire town of Holston.
Colton Woods
Fans may remember that two weeks prior to the termination of Jack Evans, a contract was signed for Woods and Evans to meet at Ascension, and that stakes were set for the match: if Woods won, then ownership of Purple Hayes Gym-- a wrestling gym currently owned by Carter Hayes and Mort Goodman-- would revert exclusively to Carter Hayes. With Carter Hayes and Colton Woods sharing a manager in Marty Sunshine, and with Sunshine having his hands in the only two gyms in town (Colton Woods's Varsity Club Training Facility and Priscilla Price's Metropolitan Fitness), such a victory would give Sunshine, Inc. a virtual monopoly over training in Holston.
However, if Colton Woods was to lose his match against Evans, than he would lose ownership interest to the Varsity Club Training Facility, which would revert back to the Township of Holston.
It was in 2010 that Colton Woods, a former wrestling state champion and a wrestling standout for Holston rival Sunshine Springs during his high school tenure, purchased Varsity Club Training Grounds from the Township. At the time, Varsity Club was formed as a wrestling school headed by All-American and Olympic hopeful C.J. Nucifora, before he left for Penn State.
According to reports, not only was the contract for the Evans-Woods match signed, but it remains binding. However, a transfer clause, carefully incorporated into the contract by Mort Goodman, provides that in the event of Evans's inability to compete, a replacement may be substituted. It is only if a substitute could not be found that Woods would win by forfeit, and Goodman would lose ownership of Purple Hayes.
As a result, it is reported that Wrestletown GM Bobby McVeigh, along with Holston Mayor Hank Murdoch, have been tirelessly scrambling to find a replacement. Unfortunately, given the limited roster and slots already spoken for, there remain few options. This remains a tremendous concern to the Mayor. "Colton Woods has made a mockery of this town-- a town built on its pride for its wrestling-- as an outsider from our rival community taking over the only place where people can train in town. It is of utmost importance that whoever steps in takes out Colton Woods, so that the Varsity Club Training Facility can revert back to what it was intended to be-- a first class gym open to the public, and not an elitist establishment earmarked only for those aligned to the Sunshine clan."
The question remains-- who is the man or woman to challenge Colton Woods, the most dominant heavyweight amateur wrestler to come out of Pennsylvania. Bobby McVeigh, who as coach of the rival Huskies during Woods's years of dominance, expressed concern as to whether such an athlete could be found. "There's no getting around the fact that Colton Woods is a powerhouse and a dangerous wrestler. There are few who match up well against him. Damian Cole (who beat Woods in 2010) was one, but he is spoken for on the pay per view. Evans was another. Aside from them, the list is short and the picking are slim."
McVeigh has assured that someone will step in to face Woods at Ascension, although it was not likely that a name would be selected prior to the night of the event.
