“Eloisa’s Bakery?”
Kolin Daire looked up at the sign on the small building that his sister was supposedly in. He let out a sigh and rubbed the sleep from his eyes with the back of his hand. He got out of the car and headed inside, wondering what else could possibly happen to him? As he entered, he started scanning the small shop, but couldn’t see his sister anywhere. The GPS was of course no help at all anymore.
“Damn it, I hope she didn’t ditch her phone in this place.”
He continued to scan the place, oblivious to the woman who had walked up to him.
"You look lost..."
Kolin finally looked at her, but as soon as he did he seemed to lose all capacity to speak. He just stood there staring into the most gorgeous eyes he’d ever seen. He started to rapidly blink, and slowly his senses returned.
“I’m actually looking for someone. Short blonde girl, probably wearing so much mascara that she looks like a raccoon, and almost certainly in a jacket or sweatshirt that’s too big for her.”
She turns, standing beside him now and points to the corner.
"I think that's who you're looking for right? "
She smiles.
"She's had three slices of cherry pie since she got here, its like she hasn't eaten in eons."
“That’s her, and she’s been a bottomless pit since the day she was born.”
Kolin went to go to his baby sister, but stopped and turned back.
“Thanks by the way.”
"No problem. You look like you could use some coffee. I'll bring you one. Let me guess, you look like a 2 sugar and milk kinda guy."
She gives him another smile.
“Right on the money.”
Kolin sort of returned the smile, but he was still a little bit hungover so it was probably more half hearted than he would have liked. He then gave the woman a simple nod and headed back to where his sister was hiding herself away. He grabbed the nearest chair and sat down, not saying a word, just looking at her before he shook his head and sighed.
“Oh fuck, how did you find me?”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“Whatever, I’m not going back to your shitty apartment. It’s like a fucking prison there.”
“I’m sorry about that. I was worried about you, and…”
She was pissed off and wasn’t gonna listen to him no matter what he said, but he had to try.
“I just wanted to keep you safe kitty cat.”
“Don’t call me that anymore.”
“That ain’t gonna happen anymore than me letting you just up and leave. Just because I got things with Cathal squared away, doesn’t mean that things okay. We’re the only family that each other has left. I’m sorry I locked the apartment up all the time, and you’ve been cooped up there for the last few weeks.”
“Sure you are warden.”
There was that angry sarcasm that he was getting incredibly tired of.
“I am. I didn’t want you running off and getting more…”
“Coke, Kolin. That’s what it’s called.”
“Kaitlin, please.”
Kolin just lowered his head, completely unsure of what to do. They sat there in silence for close to a minute until a cup of coffee was slid under his nose. The woman returns with a mug. She sets it down in front of Kolin, looking up he finally sees her name tag. 'Tavia'.
"Here you go."
She looks at the petite blonde.
"Anything else for you honey?"
“Another slice of pie and some coffee. Two sugars and some milk.”
Kaitlin gave her order and then went back to trying to hide herself away in the corner, arms tucked inside the large grey hooded sweatshirt she had stolen from her brother.
"You got it."
“Thanks.”
Kolin thanked her for the both of them and she headed off, with Kolin keeping his eyes on her for a little bit. When he turned back his sister laughed and actually smiled.
“Oh you totally want to fuck her.”
Kolin looked shocked, and then just shook his head.
“What the hell happened to you kitty cat?”
“I had to suck dick for money.”
Kolin just groaned as he put his head in his hands.
“We are never talking about any of that again. We’re starting fresh, here in Holston. I won’t leave the place locked up all the time, and when I’m off we can go and do stuff. maybe I can find you a job somewhere in town.”
“What, at the strip club?”
“Hell no, I don’t want you to ever go anywhere near that place.”
“So it’s okay for you to work there and bang one of the strippers, but I can’t even go there?”
“I didn’t have sex with anyone there, and I’m only working there because nowhere else in this town will hire someone who was in jail. Please Katilin, I’m your brother, it’s my job to protect you and make sure you’re all right.”
“Whatever. It’s not like I’ve got anywhere better to go.”
“All right.”
Tavia returned with Kaitlins coffee and pie which she greedily snatched.
“Again, thank you. Sorry about her, she forgets her manners when she sees pie.”
Kaitlin flips him off with her free hand and goes back to devouring the large slice of pie.
"No worries. After dealing with that crazy stalker with an ipad, I'd take that any day."
“ I heard about that guy before. Still, thank you for everything.”
She gave him another smile and headed off to take of the other customers. Again, he couldn’t help but look at her for a while as she walked away.
“Perv.”
Once again his sister drew a sigh and a shake of the head from him, but he kept his gaze towards the front of the store where Tavia had recently been. Now though his eyes were caught by a small sign in the front window. He did some quick backwards reading and noticed it was a help wanted sign.
“Hmmmm.”
The sign looked to have been up for a little while, and it did look like Tavia was the only waitress in the place.
