Kolin Daire found himself behind the bar of the Lollipop lounge, scrounging around for anything other than beer or shot glasses. Finally he found a sleeve of styrofoam cups and pulled out two. He sat them on the counter and grabbed the coffee pot he didn’t remember ever being used. The dark brown liquid cascaded into one cup and then the other. There was a little bit of sugar, but no cream, not even the powdered kind. He put some sugar in and grimaced as he took a sip. He looked around the bar and found what he was looking for.
“Maybe if I Irish it up that will help.”
He brought the bottle of Jameson down and poured a little in his cup. Another sip and this time not as much of a grimace. He looked at the other cup but decided to let his still slumbering cohort make that choice on her own.
From the leather couch a series of swear words in a language that Kolin didn’t understand were muttered as the woman occupying it suddenly sits up. She puts a hand to her head, grumbling as she finds her heeled boots and puts them on one painful foot at a time. Grabbing her leather jacket she starts to walk away when she notices Kolin at the bar and the pair stare at each other blankly for several seconds.
“Coffee? It’s shit, but it might help.”
She nods her head and walks over. Her dark hair is falling out of it’s ponytail. She reaches behind to pull it out, letting her long dark hair cascade around her shoulders. It’s wavy from always being up. “Thanks...” she croaks out. Her voice is scratchy, probably from all the laughing she’d done. Despite the booming bass in her head, she had to admit it had been fun.
“So, last night was… interesting.”
Kolin chuckled a little but stopped and held a hand up to his temple.
“I don’t think I’ve drank like that in… well a long freaking time.”
“I usually don’t drink at all to be perfectly frank. I hope I have your trust... about a few of the things I said?”
“I ain’t telling nobody anything that was told to me last night, and I’d hope that I can expect the same from you?”
Kolin stared down at her for a few seconds before taking another sip of coffee.
“Kolin, I may be brutal and I may dislike a lot of people in this town including my own boss but you I can honestly say are not one of those people. I think we share some common insights about certain things. We are often viewed as bad people but really, we just don’t pussy foot around what needs to be done.” she takes a sip of the coffee and winces. “This is terrible.”
“I did warn you. The whiskey helps a little bit.”
Kolin grabs the bottle and pours a little in to Laila’s cup before he puts it back up on the shelf.
“I understand what you mean with how people view us though. I’ve never claimed to be a saint, but I at least got some kind of code or whatever. Your secrets are safe with me. Whether it’s hating your boss, which I do to, or that you’d change if the right guy came along.”
“Well the latter of that I doubt. I have no time to involve myself in romantic entanglements. They only lead to more emotional distress and then more vulnerability and in this business, you cannot show vulnerability.”
Kolin just nods and takes a large gulp of his coffee to finish off the abysmal drink.
“I should probably head back to my apartment. Hopefully my sister hasn’t destroyed the entire place.”
“I take it the detox is not going well?”
“It’s just really rough, and there’s the whole deal with me not having been there for the last few years.”
“I do not have any siblings but I can imagine it must be rough. Do not despair, I believe the phrase is ‘better late than not at all’ correct?”
“Yea, I just feel like I got a lot to make up for. So, are you good to go or you need me to drive? I think the hangover is at least at a manageable level now.”
She grimaces but tries to hide it with a straight lipped smile immediately but he’s seen it. “I have endured far more pain than this headache. I shall be fine. Besides, I only live a few blocks from here.”
“All right”
Kolin ducked under the small open area of the bar and headed for the door, holding it open for Laila. Their cars were of course the only two in the parking lot, and parked right beside each other at the very back of the lot. Both of them paused as they got to their cars and looked at the other one. It was a very awkward pause, that only got worse when Laila went for a handshake and Kolin attempted a hug. He pulled back for the handshake only to have Laila move in for the hug. Finally they did a very quick hug and then got in their respective vehicles.
