Alanna hadn’t slept all night, but the snoring transvestite beside her had a pretty good sleep against her shoulder. She wished she could say that this was a first for her but in actual fact she’d seen more overnight holding cells than she cared to admit. Usually the police would end up letting her go with nothing more than a fine, thinking it would scare her straight. However that was never the case.
Out of all the things she had done in the name of mother earth, this particular incident had been the worst planned one she'd been a part of. Whether it was the bickering couple who had managed to stage a scene and blow their cover. Or the fact that the mastermind of the whole thing was only a sophomore in high school, who had run off leaving her to take the fall, and apparently the night goggles she'd brought along as well.
The consolidation of it all was that they had managed to liberate most the lab animals, but at this moment Alanna was pretty sure she'd love to wring her 'cohorts' necks.
The sound of the outer door opens and she hears the heavy footfalls of the officer that had been monitoring the nearly empty cell all night, but she could tell that someone was following behind by the echo.
He comes to the door, taps the bars with his night stick and bellows, “McKay, you’re sprung.”
She quickly stands, letting the ‘woman’ on her fall to the bench and surprisingly she didn’t even wake and kept snoring on the cold metal bench. She walks over as the officer opens the door. He’s got a round belly that is barely covered by his uniform shirt. Surprisingly he still has a full head of hair that wasn’t done with plugs. His tag reads ‘Boston’. He smells of stale coffee and cigarettes and she tries to hold back her gag as he gives her a push in the small of her back. She doesn’t expect it and given her pure exhaustion she stumbles forward into the arms of the man she’d called to bail her out of this rather tricky situation. She looks up and smirks feebly.
“Oh hey Shawn...uh... thanks.”
He looks down at her and lifts her back up to a standing position. He smiles and runs his fingers through her hair softly.
“Good morning, Sunshine. That wasn’t a bad pun, but I did come to Spring you.”
“Better you than my old man. He wasn’t impressed all that much the last time he had to get me out.” She looks a little sheepish. “But I don’t regret it so if you’re planning on lecturing me about what I did, save it.”
He cupped his hand against her jawline and softly tapped it. “You remind me of my daughter, always getting in trouble. Alanna “The Jailbird” McKay, Don’t stress over it, we have all done our time in the country jail for things we aren’t proud of here and there.”
“Who said I wasn’t proud?” A gleam entered her eyes. The Officer clears his throat and she grabs his hand and pulls him toward the exit. The first stop is a caged area where they slip her keds, an iphone and a wallet with a chain. She thanks the woman who only gives her a scowl.
Shawn took his right hand and rested it on her lower back, stroking it softly to keep her calm and to let her know that everything would be okay. “You’re a simple young lady, I half expected a purse with twenty thousand items in it, you know the typical spy gear.. Night vision goggles, a grappling hook, and the lipstick laser pointer. “ He chuckled softly.
She looks over his shoulder at him as she fastens her wallet chain to her belt loop. “You’ll find I’m not anywhere close to typical. The most make-up I wear is mascara and even then it’s rare. As for my “gear”. Well, my so called companions took all that with them when they left me to take the rap. Seems that not everyone one is as devoted to the cause as I am.”
“Well, what are friends for? I find most will stick you holding the bag, next time you want to perform a heist you give me a call first. I am generally better at getting away, then again that was a porno…”
She laughs as they exit the station and she blinks and squints in the light. “When did it get so freaking bright out. Damn it’s gone from horrible dreary winter to summer in a heartbeat. Or that could just be because I’ve been staring at grey walls all night. Who knows...”
He lead her towards the parking lot, his 57 Bel Air looked very out of place in a parking lot full of SUVs and squad cars. “Your getaway vehicle awaits. We’ll make sure we get you something to eat, I know from experience that jailhouse food is never good.”
“Three places you should never eat. Jail, hospitals and airplanes. You’re better off eating corrugated cardboard. Besides that, I was informed that I had missed ‘dinner’ so I haven’t eaten since yesterday. Food would be awesome right now.”
He opened the passenger door for her, closing it after she entered the car and following suit over towards the driver side and climbing into the car. “Wonder if cops like doughnuts, this early in the morning.” With that he started the car and spun out, leaving burning rubber in the parking lot as he sped out of there.
She smirks. “So, you said you know from experience. Seen a few jail cells yourself too have you?”
“I’ve been arrested a few times, mostly are porn related and a few have been related to the bottom of a bottle. I guess I was never meant to be a role a model.”
“That’s okay. Me either. I leave that to my brother to do. He’s the one that all high and mighty and thinks he’s better than us. He hasn’t talked to my Dad in four years. Last time I have talked to him was when he gave me shit for protesting. Saying ‘Al when are you gunna grow up and realize that no one gives a crap about your causes. Get a real job and contribute to society.’ Ridiculous.” She shakes her head.
“I would say you turned out just fine, you little rebel you. Have you figured out what you would like to eat? I believe most places are serving breakfast.” He looked out and spotted the exit that would take the dynamic duo back to Holston and turned off towards it.
She shrugs. “I’m so hungry and tired that I’d probably eat just about anything as long as it was food.” she rolls her eyes at him, making sure to add the last bit. “I didn’t trust that woman in the cell with me not to try and molest me so I didn’t sleep.”
“Maybe I should just pull over to the side of the road and molest you, wouldn’t want you miss out on the dropping the soap experience.” He chuckled, obviously kidding. He kept a keen look out for any place that he could pull off to that would serve the poor girl a decent meal.
“I’m sure that would be a great inconvenience for you.” she laughs again. Feeling a bit light headed she takes a deep breath. “Note to self, pack snacks next time.”
“It would, I don’t even have a rubber. As if I would use something like that.” He reached across her lap towards the glove box, his forearm brushing against her stomach as he opened it and reached in, he pulled out a bottle of water and some aspirin and handed them to her.
She takes them, giving him a grateful smile. “Most people don’t believe me when I say I eat almost as much as a grown man and still manage to not ever gain a single pound. My Dad says I have my mother’s metabolism. Even at 42 she’s thin and still gorgeous.”
“I would say every woman is beautiful in their own way, you just have to give that flower a chance to blossom. “ He took the exit into Holston, seeing the outline of the town in the distance.
“No wonder women tend to swoon with you.” she gives him a cheesy smile. “You always know the right thing to say.”
“Better be careful, or you’ll soon find yourself swooning over me too.” He pulled into the parking lot to Eloisa’s Bakery and looked over at her. “Does this seem like a decent place to eat? I figured you rebels probably liked their fresh baked goods and it smells like they just pulled something out of the oven.”
“Sounds perfect to me. I hear the food here is mint anyway.”
“Mint? That’s an original thing to say. I feel like you have a very old soul in that body of yours fighting to get out of there sometimes.”
“That could be true. I’d probably be an awesome hippie.” She gives a giggle before unbuckling her seat belt. She crawls over the seat to kiss his cheek. “Thanks again for coming to rescue me. Not often I need a knight.”
“Shawn Cage, asshole by day.. even bigger asshole by night. Holston’s first anti-super hero, rescuing the damsels in distress.” He chuckled and tapped his cheek again, as in asking for another kiss. “Just be sure to keep it between us, don’t need your daddy wigging out on me again.”
She leans forward again only this time she grabs his face and plants one right on his lips. "Sure thing doll." She smirks, quickly getting out of the car.
He placed both hands on the steering wheel, taken back slightly. “Wow, those damn McKay girls..”
