INT. GYMNASIUM - HOLSTON HIGH SCHOOL - EVENING (JANUARY 2002)
We are inside of the place where all the magic happens-- the Holston High School gymnasium on a Friday evening in the Winter of 2002-- the heart of Huskies Wrestling season.
The gym is packed and loud, two massive bleaches, each twenty rows deep, line each side of the gym. You couldn't fit another spectator on the bleachers if you tried.
The bleachers on the left are reserved for the fans of Holston, proudly sporting their blue and gold.
On the other side of the bleachers are the fans of the Marauders.
The Marauders of Sunshine Springs.
Tensions are high. They could not be any higher, as they always are when these two teams get together.
The scoreboard reflects that the Holston Huskies are ahead, 42-38.
On the mat, a younger C.J. NUCIFORA, representing the Huskies at 215 lbs-- the weight class right below heavyweight-- is putting Sunshine Springs's Dean Hamlin on his back with a half nelson. Dean is fighting it, but it's useless. This is C.J. Nucifora-- best in the state at his weight class-- and the outcome is inevitable.
The fans are pounding on their seats in a rhythmic fashion-- it's almost tribal-- as they always do when a pinfall is imminent.
C.J. puts Dean on his back, clenches his head, and there it is: the ref slams the mat, the whistle blows, and the whole town of Holston is on its feet.
This win puts the Huskies ahead enough to locks in the win for Holston over their Sunshine Springs arch rivals.
Still, there is one match that remains-- heavyweight-- and while Sunshine Springs cannot come from behind for the team victory, they've got the finisjher to make sure that they end the night on a high note.
It's now the Sunshine Springs, despite having already lost the team meet, who have come alive in support of the beast that is Colton Woods.
Colton sprints to the center of the mat, flexes his massive arms, and awaits his opponent. The ref calls for them to shake. He has to tell Colton twice, as Colton has no intention or desire to play nice; and so he offers a perfunctory touch of the hands-- the closes you're gonna get to a handshake from Colton.
The ref blows the whistle, and like an caged animal that has been prodded and then released, Colton comes at Khan with a ferocity that is almost difficult to watch, shooting in with a power double, lifting Khan off his feet, carrying the large Husky around the perimeter of the mat, until finally slamming him down.
Khan lands on his back. Woods is on top of him. The ref smacks the mat.
The who thing lasts less than twenty seconds.
As Colton Woods celebrates, two men stand among the Maruader's wrestling squad, admiring the beast. They are MAYOR SHELLY SUNSHINE-- the mayor of Sunshine Springs-- and his brother, visiting from out of town, New Jersey divorce attorney MARTY SUNSHINE.
Shelly is applauding for Colton. He turns slightly toward his younger brother.
Marty swats the air.
Shelly come on, let me introduce you to this kid-- kid, who am I kidding-- let me introduce you to this guy.
Shelly leads Marty across the center of the mat to Colton Woods.
Marty and Colton shake hands.
Marty, slightly offended, looks to his brother.
Marty, ignoring Shelly, is caught in a momentary daydream. He turns his attention to Colton Woods.

SHELLY SUNSHINE
Well I'm glad you were able to make it out
here to see him wrestle before he graduates.
Is he a beast, or what? God, I am gonna miss
this big son of a bitch. Say what you want
about Holston, but Sunshine Springs owned the
heavyweight division for the last six years.

MARTY SUNSHINE
Six years?
SHELLY SUNSHINE
Yeah, it took Colton two extra years to
graduate. He's gonna be the most mature
college fucking freshman out there. I'm
gonna cherish every moment of his final year.

MARTY SUNSHINE
Tell me about it. You train 'em, teach 'em
all you know, you raise them like they're
your own kids, and they grow up so fast.
I've got the same thing going with Damian
back home. Now that I came out to see your
boy, you better make the trip to Jersey to
come see mine. He's winning states this year.

Does he still have Carter
Hayes in his weight class?
Hayes in his weight class?
MARTY SUNSHINE
Eh, fuck that goofball. He got the first
time him and Damian wrestled. Damian's taking
him in the states this year-- mark my words.

SHELLY SUNSHINE
Colton, hell of a match out there. I
particularly like it when you stick
it to these Holston cocksuckers.

COLTON WOODS
Thanks, mayor. The pleasure of punishing
these pampered Holston pricks is all mine.

SHELLY SUNSHINE
Colton, call me Shelly, okay? I wanted to
introduce you to my younger brother, Marty.
Marty, you might wanna get this tank's
autograph, because in a couple years, he's
going pro, and he's gonna be a household name.

Pro, huh? You know, I've always
toyed with the idea of trying my
hand at management in the pros.
SHELLY SUNSHINE
Get the hell out of here-- what
do you know about the pros?
Marty, slightly offended, looks to his brother.
MARTY SUNSHINE
What are you talking about? I could
manage in the pros if I wanted.
SHELLY SUNSHINE
Are you kidding? My son Ira has
just as much chance going to law
school as you do managing in the pros.
MARTY SUNSHINE
If you do go pro, good luck, kid.
Maybe our paths will cross some day.
